NEST HEADS by John Allen

This is usually me -- I'd rather be reading than watching TV. I am still exposed to a lot of TV, living in a house with a husband and two kids. But there are very few shows for which I will switch on the television. I like (but don't watch every week) Numbers, Monk, CSI (original), and NCIS. I also occasionally watch Cold Case and Without A Trace. Last year I enjoyed a new crime drama called Close To Home. But I will make the time to watch Law and Order Special Victims Unit and the newer Law and Order Criminal Intent.
I liked the original Law and Order and used to watch it most of the time. When the spin off SVU came on the air I enjoyed it even more. But my favorite of the three has to be Law and Order CI, for various reasons, not the least of which are the acting abilities of Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe. CI starts its new season this Thursday on the USA Network, and this weekend they have been showing a CI marathon. I have indulged myself! I even stayed up way later than I should have last night watching episode after episode.
I think it is a very intelligent, sophisticated show, but I particularly like the acting and the way the main characters mesh together. Vincent D'Onofrio has played very diverse roles over the years, and I find his character on this show, Bobby Goren, fascinating -- the way he uses his hands when he talks, the way he sits close to a suspect he's interrogating, casually propping his chin in his hand and closely studying the suspect's face, his speech cadence, even the movements of his head and neck are just fascinating; I can't think of any other word to describe it. His character is Holmes-like in his deductive powers, Columbo-like in noticing and zeroing in on the smallest detail, and a genius who is on that borderline between sanity and having a total nervous breakdown.
Erbe's character of Alex Aemes is perfect as a foil for D'Onofrio's character. She is calm, reasonable, smart, and she understands Gore and his methods and deals well with his quirkiness. She also isn't afraid to rein him in when needed. I also like seeing this kind of female playing the senior officer.
Last year the other CI duo were Chris Noth playing Mike Logan, a bit of a hothead with a good gut instinct, and Julianne Nicholson who played Wheeler, the new kid on the block. This year Nicholson is being replaced with an actress I'm not familiar with, Alicia Witt. I liked the combination of Noth and Nicholson and hope Witt's character meshes as well.
So, here I have given you an entry the likes of which you won't often see from me. I rarely go ga-ga over an actor or performer of any kind, and I don't usually tout TV shows or specific actors. But I am rather infatuated with Law & Order Criminal Intent.
Left to right: Julianne Nicholson, Chris Noth, Vincent D'Onofrio, Eric Bogosian, and Kathryn Erbe.

Lori- i had to laugh at this entry because CI is the one law and order i will never watch...simply because i can not STAND to watch Vincent! his tilt of the head and monitone voice drive me completely insane. I did watch it a few times when Chris Noth was on, (btw- it was Chris who played Mike Logan :)) i really like him. NCIS and SVU? those are "never miss" in my book, absolutely love them both. and have you gotten to see Criminal Minds yet? it is another good one, (although, like NCIS, not a law and order spinoff). i find Criminal Minds scarier than the rest, i will only watch it during the day (you can stop laughing now!). enjoy the rest of the CI marathons :)

I have always loved Chris Noth...
be well,
Dawn
Thanks for the reminder.........I love Law&Order. You described Bobby Goren extremely well. AND I am so grateful you didn't use the word, amazing. I hate that overused word. Anne
I watch very little TV too. When John is gone I enjoy the quiet so much I don't watch anything. We did watch Cold Case this week. Paula
I'm like you. I'd rather read...unless Grey's Anatomy is on!

Hello. I have to say that I do enjoy reading as well. I do agree with you on this entry. I too watch CSI, Law and Order Special Victims Unit and Law and Order Criminal Intent. I still like Law and Order. I like watching Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe. Vincent is my favorite of all. I like watching him and I think that he deserves an award for his acting on the show. I also like Chris Noth when he plays Logan he too is a great actor. Thanks for sharing this. Take care.
You are one of my favorites! Thank you for being that someone! Enjoy the smiles you receive. Take care my friend,
Katie
I am also a big fan of L & O CI... for the same reasons! Hes just so brilliant! I do enjoy the two new people...Noth & his partener...but still enjoy seeing more of the "original" CI cast. I have to remember to watch them on USA..thats not a station I normally watch... and not a time I normally watch TV!
Thanks for the rundown...I liked it all!
God Bless-
Amanda
I'd rather read as well. I think you learn so much more from reading. :o) I hope you have a great day!

I'm like you in my tv habits. Once in a great while something will keep me tuning in week after week. I enjoy Law and Order Criminal Intent, it's something both Doc and I appreciate watching together, for all the reasons you stated here. Once in a great while I appreciate something abnormal like Supernatural. Why? Because life isn't diced so nice and easy in reality. There are things that are simply unexplained. (Hugs) Indigo
I LOVE Goren and Eames. I have almost every episode on DVD. I was always a big fan of Mike Logan in the regular Law & Order series and was happy to hear he was coming into CI. However, I just don't think they've matched him up with the right partner yet. I think it might be the boy/girl thing. They should try matching him up with another guy.
BTW: Loved the first episode of the new season!
