Earthquake

We just had a tremor a few minutes ago.

It woke me up out of a dead sleep!!!

I woke up to my bed shaking and I could hear the furniture hitting the walls.  It felt like it lasted at least 30 seconds.  When it was over I got up, walked to the living room, noted our clock said 5:36 a.m., and turned on the TV to one of our local news programs.  They were just coming back from a commercial break and they said, "Yes, that was an earthquake you just felt!"

I am still really shocked that it was strong enough to wake me up.

They are just now saying that the center was in Illinois and that it registered 5.4 on the Richter scale.  My sister-in-law, Maxi, just called me a few minutes ago to see if we were okay.  She and Mary had just woke up and felt it.  I called my Mom, and my sister Lois said that she woke up to it, too.  Thomas is at work, but I haven't been able to get in touch with him yet.

We do live near the New Madrid fault, so we get small earthquakes or tremors a lot, but usually don't feel them.  The last one that I felt was around 1981, and this one was worse.

Oh well, just wanted to share.  I'm going to stay tuned to the news for a few more minutes.  Did any of my fellow J-Landers in Kentucky or Indiana feel that??

Update:  The earthquake was 10 miles below the surface.  Tall buildings in Indianapolis were actually shaking.  A building across from the KY Derby Headquarters on West Kentucky Street in Louisville had some damage.  My bedroom phone and its base fell off the bedside table.  I just remembered that I heard it fall when I woke up.  This was "only" a 5.4, so that's pretty minor, but still -- !!

I just read that Mosie felt it while sitting in her kitchen. 5.4 is enough to shake you up. I'm glad you didn't get hurt, and you didn't get damage.  It'll be our turn soon....AAAAAKKKKKK!!

I had a comment from Traci in TN this morning asking if we'd felt the earthquake. I thought, "Earthquake? We had an earthquake?" Ha! Both Ken and I were sound asleep and didn't feel anything, but we're up by the Michigan state line, so we're pretty far removed from it. I DID wake up around that time and tossed and turned, so maybe on some level I felt something. Glad you're all okay and had no damage (other than maybe your phone).

I live in NE Ohio but didn't feel the earthquake... I did, however, experience an earthquake on September 22, 1993 in Klamath Falls, Oregon... It was sometime in the afternoon hours and I was watching tv in the living room...my husband watching sports on the tv in the bedroom and our 9 yr old daughter was in the bath tub when it hit... Being from Ohio originally and never having experienced an earthquake and not knowing what it was, I thought it was the second coming of the Lord! LOL I thought the ground was going to open up and swallow us whole!  The windows started rattling like a freight train was coming through and our daughter came running out of the bathroom like a freightened little doe!  When we tried to walk on the floor the ground was moving and our legs felt like jelly... It was like a bad dream... you couldn't run, your legs would just go every which direction!  And the dogs were trying to run... their legs would be moving to beat ninety but they would be running in place without moving! LOL  We managed to make it ouside (which was not smart) just in time to transformers blowing up all around us!  The neighbors being from california knew what it was and didn't seem the least bit upset!  I on the other hand was frantic!  Stores all around town closed down because things had fallen off shelves and broken, glass was everywhere, electricity was out... People came out of their homes like ants coming out of an ant hill under attack... This one poor couple from California driving on hwy 97 at the time was struck by a boulder that had come loose and crashed into their car... the man died instantly, the woman survived... Boy, talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time!  It was fortunately the only fatality as a result of the quake.  But the danger didn't stop when the earthquake did... there were aftershocks for days... Oh well, I live through it! LOL!   ~Journey

At least nobody your end got hurt, Lori. I experienced a 5.2 some 15 years back, scary.

Scary!! I've only experienced something like that once when there was an earthquake out in the ocean. It was only enough to make my computer monitor shake oddly but freaked me out -- earthquakes in Florida? I'd never heard of such a thing and lived here my whole life.

One more crunch!

Scary!  I'm glad that everyone's okay.  There was a small one in Ohio several years ago, when I lived there, but I was in the car at the time and missed the whole dang thing!

I definitely felt it in S. Illinois watching my front large window shake tremendously.   I read all of your comment's to see how many other felt it.    The one in Oregon from 1993 had to be life changing.   I know I read your journal about the crunches for comments.    Did I thank you for visiting my journal and offering your encouragement concerning my back surgery?   I can't remember.   I have a back brace to wear and was instructed to hold in my stomach muscles as I am trying to do now sitting here without the brace.    My condition was not from osteoporosis, but from injury, so my surgeon said the bone is so strong that no fusion was needed.    It has made my recovery much easier.    I worry that I may have bent, or twisted, or something on my list of not to do's, but I think I am OK.   I will ask him if anything was done to the discs that showed bulging.   I am new to your journal and want you to know I am slow getting around, but do get to know people over the years.     mark

We had a slight one here in Phoenix, but that was the scariest feeling because this tall building creaked and shook a little.  I think earth quakes are just quakey.  They do that to your insides  I was wondering how you people were doing experiencing this one.   Gerry

Wow! That would be scary! I have never felt one. I guess we have one not to far from us (couple of miles) but it has not hit for a long time. They say it will be bad if it ever does. Glad that you are safe. God Bless, Janie

I remember we had one in 2001 I believe it was...my computer desk shook....but this one was much worse.... glad ya'll are okay.... not sure what the amount is now...but as of monday i think there had been 19 aftershocks....kinda scary..
