Hi! Me 5¢!

I have throughout my whole life had this problem.  While driving down the road, walking through a store, or even just walking in my own house my brain will subconciously read things -- road signs, ads, book jackets, anything!  It may be a word, a phrase, or an entire sentence.

I don't do it all the time, but there are days (I guess days when my OCD is bad or when I'm tired or nervous) where I seem to do it all day long.  I don't really notice it until all of a sudden I become aware of a word or phrase repeating itself endlessly in my brain, and then I know it's going to be one of those days.  It usually runs in the background like a registry program on my computer, but once I become conscious of it it becomes extremely annoying.  I mean, really, my brain needs all the rest it can get -- I don't need it to go out on its own, a gray-matter rogue, reading and interpreting things recklessly and without purpose.

Well on a recent shopping trip I checked out at one of those You-Scan things.  I was getting ready to pick up my bags when I realized that the phrase, "Hi!  Me 5¢!" was shouting in my brain.

  "Huh?!"

I knew I must have read it somewhere and started desperately looking all around the You Scan counter, trying to find those words!  There was nothing at the counter or on a display nearby with those words.  I'm glad there was no one waiting for my You Scan, because right there at the counter I emptied my bags and quickly looked at my purchases to see if that phrase would pop out at me.  I don't know if it would have been that important that I find it if it hadn't been such a strange little phrase.

And then there it was!  On my botttle of Gatorade A.M., right next to the bar code (where my brain would have quickly scanned it as I scanned the bottle) it said very plainly:  HI, ME 5¢.

Of course it meant Hawaii (HI), Maine (ME) 5¢, as in a 5¢ refund.

But for me now whenever I buy Gatorade I hear a little cheery-bouncy-cheerleader-type-voice in my head saying, "Hi!  Me 5¢!"

Just thought I'd share.

that would be frustrating until you figured out where it came from; so glad you found out the mystery of HI ME 5 cents; it is a cute one to have in your head though :)

When I read the subject line I heard that same little cheery-bouncy-cheerleader- type voice! I' probably going to have nightmares tonight about it, LOL! The graphic was a perfect choice for this entry too!

Ha! With me, it's usually songs. I'll be trying desperately to go back to sleep after waking up too early, and a song will start looping in my brain. If I'm lucky, it will be a decent song like "Me and Bobbie McGee." More often, it will be something maddening like the "Brady Bunch" theme, or "I Think I Love You" by the Partridges.

Dang. I think I've just jinxed myself.

Well, you planted THAT seed in my brain.   SIGH..............I will hear somebody talking and a phrase will remind me of a song and I'll start singing it.  Not loudly, just sticks like spaghetti to my brain.   Anne

I have the same blessed gift and it can be annoying.  That was so funny and interesting and a sign of being very smart to have a photographic memory like that.

My memory is with songs alot and if there's not a song, then a song comes to me from a line either spoken or read.

I think this is absolutely amazing though!

I'm glad the voice was at least cheery and bouncy. One day recently I kept singing over and over "What ya gonna do when they come for you". Paula

I think we all have had times when we cannot get something out of our heads :o)

It seems I have the same affliction.  It can be very annoying at times and at other times it is a mechanism for remembering things.  I'm great with song lyrics too.  Never forget the words to any song I like.

Very interesting, I can see where that could drive you crazy by the end of the day.  I guess I'm slow, I thought it was reading as though the bottle was talking and saying "Hi, I'm worth 5 cents  (ooook, where is the cent sign??? ROFLMAO)  Ah geesh, I am going to go now!  ;)

I have had these similar moments and I could totally relate to it... it's like we go on overload trying to learn everything and not miss anything happening about us.  The problem seems to be having these very alert overactive minds that read as much as we can as fast as we can... then we actually translate it later I think.  Yes, I am so there with you.  LOL.  I read so many books this past year I learned a whole bunch.... it was good for my soul.  I hate it when I start absorbing signs and advertisements though as I think that is when I am the most starved for something more.  LOL.  Much hugs and thank you so much for helping me get through a very difficult decision.  You are a good friend indeed to me Lori.
