Victory and Tragedy Within Minutes of One Another

Big Brown, a beautiful horse, just won the 134th Kentucky Derby by about 5 lengths.

Coming in second was the filly, Eight Belles, my personal favorite.

Sadly, on pulling up, Eight Belles collapsed.  They just announced that she had broken both front ankles and was immediately euthanized before even being taken off in the equine ambulance.

Thankfully, Eight Belles' jockey was able to walk away.

I have mixed emotions about horse racing... I love to watch them, racing or not.... and it can be an exhilarating sport, but at the same time things happen such as what happened with Eight Belles, among other things in the horse trading business... But they are a beautiful animal!  So very sorry to hear of Belles accident... They really had no choice but to put her down, and the quicker the better.

Oh no! I had read about the winner but hadn't heard about Eight Belles. That's so sad :-(

How awful for Eight Belles.  I don't like horse racing ~ this just breaks my heart.

Oh how sad!   I hate to hear that!  I couldn't watch as I was at a Ladies' Retreat.

I realize that 'they shoot horses' but that was so sad.

I was so disturbed by seeing that, Lori. As much as Ken and I have always enjoyed watching the races, I just can't stand to see anything like that again. (We watched when Barbaro broke his foreleg.) I hate to say it, but I think I'm done with watching. It makes me cringe every time I see it on the news....

I don't and can't watch racing like this. It saddens me to see such gorgeous creatures pushed to their limit. I would much rather be entertained watching them roam in the wild as they were intended. (Hugs) Indigo
