Yesterday, someone came forward and admitted putting the dead opctopus into the Ohio River: Film student put the octopus in the Ohio River. I saw the interview with the guy on the news last night. He and his friends had bought it through a local exotic food dealer and had put it into the Ohio to film it. (Why? I don't know.) They had planned to eat it (!!) after they were finished filming it, but it "smelled fishy", and when they looked up how to cook it, they found out that if it smelled fishy they shouldn't eat it, especially, he said, after having been in the sun all day.
Duh.
The guy might face a charge of littering for putting a dead animal in the river.
I knew something smelled fishy about this story!
