Eler Beth came running into the house this afternoon, calling to me to come out to see a sight: Seems a baby 5-Lined Skink, a.k.a. a Blue-Tailed Skink (lizard), was on our front window ledge with its little blue tail caught on a tiny little spider web. As we watched, it struggled and struggled but couldn't get loose.
Eler Beth ran to get something to catch it in, although I was calling after her the whole time, "We aren't keeping it!! You can catch it to show Dad and your friends, then you have to turn it loose!" But before we could get it, it finally struggled free and ran off.
I wonder what the spider would have thought if she'd come home to find a baby lizard caught in her web?

Do you know what kind of spider it was? When we had a pond in our front yard, there were some spiders living amongst the plant life which, I have read but never witnessed, catch and eat fish... very small fish, but fish just the same. I suppose a larger spider could inject enough venom to disable a young skink long enough for the spider to make a meal of it. Not something your daughter would have wanted to see, probably. You describe the web as tiny and little, so the spider was likely not expecting something as big as the skink. Good that it got away! That might be a research assignment Bea
that would have been an interesting picture to see; I don't think I've ever seen a skink of that color before. Glad it got away though from the web.

Eler Beth has a good interest in nature, doesn't she? Thats wonderful. I always like to see the spider webs in the winter on trees, damp from the dew and the sun shining on them. Paula
Got a picture of such a creature? Never heard of it!
Hi Lori!
I'm just catching up! Glad the little lizard (skink) got away!

The fishing story brought goose bumps! I can just see you both standing there scared to death for EACH OTHER! Glad he was ok!!!!!

That spider would have said, "YUM-O"! Jae
Sometimes I really wonder if Eler Beth and Bug aren't really the same girl. LOL Bug has brought me more creepy crawly things in her young life than her Bubba ever thought about. - Barbara
