I think I have all my Monday chores done now, the ones that didn't get done yesterday. It was nice having Thomas off work over the weekend, and the weather was simply beautiful, although a bit humid yesterday.
Saturday morning Thomas and I got out early and checked out some yard sales. I found a white chenille spread for $3.00. It is large, and I couldn't find a single thing wrong with it. I can remember my mother having a white chenille bedspread for many years, and this one is very much like it. It has a perfumy smell that I don't like, though, so I need to have it cleaned.
I remember a lady I worked with once talking about how she could remember saving her money for a chenille bedspread from Sears when she was a young married woman. It was probably only about $30 or so, but that was a lot for her and her husband back then. Her point was that if you wanted something nice back then you scrimped and saved for it. Nowadays if you don't have the cash for it you buy it with a credit card or your store card, at least most people do. And I can remember my mother saving for "nice" things like that. She had a little jar she kept in her bedroom where she would put a bit of change now and then, change that would have been left over from the household money, since she didn't work outside the home. Do people still save like that for a special purchase? I have a sad feeling that nowadays if you manage to save a bit of change and let it build up, you probably end up having to cash it in to pay for gas for the car!
I can also remember S & H Green Stamps. I used to LOVE looking through the Green Stamp catalog. Mom would save up her stamps for something she wanted for the house that she probably wouldn't have even thought of purchasing otherwise, and she'd usually have some left over for us kids to get something, too.
Well, anyway, I'm pleased with my chenille bedspread purchase on Saturday. I don't know what the pattern is called, but it's a pretty one.
Saturday afternoon we went to Oxmoor Mall in Louisville. I really do like that mall -- it's much larger than ours and very attractively laid out. I did a bit of people watching, which was fun, and spent more time and money than I should have in Archivers.
Sunday night Eler Beth made a fire in the firepit and roasted some hot dogs. She loves to do that.
Yesterday I actually went to the pond with Thomas and Eler Beth while they were fishing. I didn't stay as long as they did because the heat and sun started bothering me, but it was nice for a while. They caught catfish and bluegill and another eating-sized snapping turtle, about the size of the first one she caught. Eler Beth has been planning on putting pictures in her journal of them letting Bowser go, but she hasn't done it yet, so maybe I'll sneak some in here.
I hope everyone had a really good weekend, and that no one had any problems from Gustav. Have a great week!

when I got married I received three chenille bedspreads...and I used them too...they were beautiful...but like all things...they wore out...wish I had kept one back....oh well...if wishes were pennies...I would be rich beyond happiness LOLOL...I expect to see a pic of this spread....soon....hugs...Ora
Oh yeah, S&H Green Stamps! I loved licking the stamps and sticking them in the books!
My Mom was on her own at the age of 16. When her and Dad got married shortly after WWII, she had saved up enough to buy their refrigerator! My folks lament all the time that while they worked to save up for such things, the attitude now seems to be "I want it and I want it NOW." No wonder our country is in such a mess with debt.
Ken and I still save up for things! We saved for 6 years for our cruise, and currently we're saving for our Route 66 trip. It's called delayed gratification, and I find that when it finally happens, it makes the experience all the sweeter. :)
Love ya, Beth
I love finding a new-to-me item at a yard sale. Good deal!

WOW! S&H Green stamps. I remember putting them in the books but I never remember purchasing something with them. Guess I better ask Mother. Her mind is still sharp where her history is concerned. It is what I told her yesterday she conveniently forgets!

We only use credit cards now for points and gifts, we pay them off in full every month, period! If there is something we want, we scrimp and save, like you mentioned :o)
I've been searching for a satisfactory chenille bedspread for over a year!
S&H Green Stamps was almost a way fo life for some folks. There were also Yellow Stamps and Raleigh Coupns if you were a smoker. Nowadays it credit cards not saving up to buy. Unless, of course, you save up to pay off the credit card. (Shhh.) DB - Vagabond Journeys
I have a seafoam green chenille bedspread, but it's getting fragile, so I can't use it until I mount it on some sort of backing-like a quilt, but without the batting.
I don't remember S&H green stamps.
I should start a change jar like that. I usually end up with so much change that the zipper on the change pocket won't zip.

I LOVED the S&H green stamp books....mom would save those things like crazy and we'd end up with new silverware!! By the way, did you ever find a home for the turtle? It's been a while since we exchanged emails, and we were just wondering. Sue
I remember years ago my mom had a chenille spread; I really thought it was pretty! I remember G&H Stamps too and where we lived was also Blue Chip stamps; my mom saved those as well as Betty Crocker coupons and got some nice things from that catalog
I have a friend who saves like you mentioned; she does put money aside for things; sometimes she has to get into it; sometimes she can get what she's saving for; they don't have much debt; learned it from her parents; more people need to do that these days (me included)
sounds like a nice weekend!
betty
Those stamps were still around when I got married and we saved them for a lot of nice things. I still pay my one credit card off at the end of each month. When I was in high school I worked for twenty five cents an hour and saved for a leather fringed jacket I wanted sooo bad. Paula
Oh gosh, green stamps! You triggered fond memories of me sitting at the kitchen table with my grandma...me pasting stamps and she looking through the book at what she wanted to get with her cache of stamps. Such simple days ~ who would believe now that a little green stamp pasted in a book could bring such joy. I remember one time she got 3 little stuffed cats for me with her stamps..I'm sure she would rather have gotten something for herself but she didn't. Thanks, I hadn't thought about this in a long time.

Ahhhh the good old days. It's fun to remember how cheap everything was, but do we remember how little we were paid? LOL. My mother and I both saved green stamps. I got several things with them that I would not have ordinarily gotten. Have a great day.
Hugs, Joyce
Congratulations on your great find. I love when that happens...
Oh my gosh,,S & H green stamps..We used to save them also. Sure seemed like a more simple time to me..
Have a great hump day!

My Mom and Dad were depression era kids so they always saved for stuff instead of charging it. And, it you didn't need it, you did not get it! lol. I felt like a deprived kid! lol!
Yes, there are people who still save like that. Mike puts all our loose change into a jar. We do not have a credit card and not had one for over thirty years, too tempting, too easy to run up huge debts. I remember green stamps as well. My Mother used to have books of them and also got something nice with them. Thanks for the memories.

I'm so glad that Marti and Barbara and their families and houses are alright!
Have a great weekend!
love,nat
p.s. thanks a ton for your wonderful comments about my sister!
Your kids are soooo adorable!
I have done really good outside but running in the low running gears of a grasshopper right now! lol I will get done one day. I figure the real deep cleaning inside can be done when the snow is flying outside. lol It is cold here! 52 degrees this morning brrrrr! Cold when you are use to 100 degrees. I can remember not even having ANY money in a jar between pay days. lol Hot dogs always taste better roasted outside. lol Wishing you a wonderful weekend. Janie
I wish we still had S&H green stamps, I remember cashing them in as a real treat!
Martha :-)
